International Freshmen Admission

The requirements for freshmen admission are the following:

1) Completed application form and essay. You can complete an application and essay online.

2) USD $25 Application Fee. The application fee is waived if you apply online. If you apply via mail, the application fee must be sent with the application.

3) Original Transcripts. All official transcripts (certified true photocopies are acceptable) must be accompanied by translations in English and sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admission. If a certified copy is submitted, originals must be presented upon arrival. Transcripts submitted via e-mail or fax are not accepted.

4) SAT or ACT Scores. While not required, students wishing to be considered for merit-based scholarships must submit SAT or ACT scores.

5) TOEFL Scores. Results of the TOEFL scores must be sent to Saint Louis University (SLU Code: 6629). Students whose native language is not English may satisfy the University’s minimum English requirement for entry into academic course work by meeting one of the following standards:

• Obtain a score of 525 on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT) and a TWE score of at least 4.0;
   

• Obtain a 70 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) and at least a 4 on the SLU Writing Evaluation (taken upon arrival);
   

• Obtain a score of 194 or higher on the computer-based TOEFL (CBT) and a TWE score of at least 4.0;
   

• Obtain a IELTS International overall band score of 6.0 or higher;
   

• Obtain a score of 87 or higher on the English Proficiency Test and a TWE score of at least 4.0, both given by the Saint Louis University English as a Second Language program (taken upon arrival);
   

• Provide at least 30 transferable semester hours earned at a U.S. college or university (these credit hours must include a minimum of 12 hours in the Saint Louis University liberal arts core courses and evidence of successful completion ["C" or better] of an English composition course that is equivalent to English 150 or English 190 at Saint Louis University);
   

• Receive a grade of "P" (Pass) in Intensive English: Advanced Part-time (ESL 115) and pass the TOEFL exam administered by Saint Louis University at the end of the semester.

Notes:
(a) If your native language is not English, your registration for academic course work is contingent upon satisfactory performance on the pre-registration English Proficiency Exam, administered prior to each semester. If it is determined that additional English studies are necessary, you may be required to take the appropriate English courses prior to, or concurrent with, matriculation in the University’s academic programs. Upon your arrival, you should make an appointment with the appropriate academic advisor from your College or School to plan your academic schedule. 

(b) Students with an iBT score of 64, a PBT score between 510-524 or a CBT score between 180-193 and TWE score of 3.5 (or IELTS of 5.5, or English Proficiency Test score of 80) may enroll half time in academic classes and half time in the Saint Louis University Intensive English Program (ESL 115).

(c) Students with PBT scores below 510, or 180 on the computer based TOEFL (CBT), IELTS scores below 5.5 or Michigan scores below 74 must enroll fulltime in the ESL program.  

(d) The University’s minimum requirement for English proficiency is a score of 450 on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT), an iBT of 46, or a CBT score of 133.

6) Declaration of Financial Status.

• A letter (declaration) of financial support from the person(s) or sponsoring agency providing funds for your tuition and living expenses for the duration of your study at Saint Louis University; OR
   

• A letter (certification) from the sponsor’s bank verifying that such funds currently are available and will be so for each subsequent year of your study at the University. The letter from the bank must be on letterhead and original; no copies are accepted. The financial evidence must cover at least the amount of expenses needed for the first year of your study.  The estimated amount for one academic year for undergraduate students currently is $41,350 and for ESL students $22,000.

Once the Office of Undergraduate Admission has received all of the required information, the applicant’s file is reviewed to determine eligibility for admission to the University. In reviewing an applicant’s file, first and foremost, the Office of Undergraduate Admission examines the academic performance in high school (or university, when applicable). Solid academic performance in college preparatory course work is a primary concern in determining an applicant’s admission status. All students are notified of their admission status upon completion of this thorough review.
